Genesis-The Book Of Beginnings-Session 4
March 1, 2026
Genesis Chapter 2, Session 4, provides a detailed account of the creation of man and woman, focusing on the Garden of Eden as a sanctuary where humanity interacts with God. While Genesis 1 offers a cosmic overview, Chapter 2 zooms in to describe God forming Adam from dust, planting the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge, and creating Eve from Adam’s rib to establish the first marriage.
Unlike the spoken creation of Chapter 1, God is depicted here as a craftsman. He forms the man (adam) from the dust of the ground (adamah) and breathes the “breath of life” into him, making him a living soul. God places him in Eden to “tend and keep it,” establishing humanity’s role as stewards of creation. The narrative introduces a critical moral boundary: Adam may eat freely from any tree except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, with the warning that disobedience brings death.
The text asserts that “it is not good that man should be alone,” highlighting the human need for community. After Adam names the animals and finds no suitable partner among them, God induces a deep sleep, removes a rib, and fashions the woman. Upon seeing her, Adam speaks the first poem in Scripture, declaring her “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh,” a phrase that defines the covenant of marriage as becoming “one flesh”.
